When I was younger, I remember how excited I’d get about special occasions. From birthdays to holidays, it was my chance to get creative and make handmade gifts. I was too young to have a job so I couldn’t buy anything, but I absolutely loved creating. I’d find materials around our home — from faux flowers my mom had sitting in a vase, to pieces of cardboard that were going to be thrown out — and turn them into (what I thought) was a pretty cool gift. Although something an 8 year old thought would be a great birthday gift was probably pretty lame, it was still fun to make and it’s the thought that counts, right?
Well, not much has changed because even now as an adult, I still love giving personalized and handmade gifts. Sure it’s easy to walk into a store, grab a gift card, fill it with money and call it a day, but where’s the fun in that? Gift-giving is about showing your loved ones you’re thinking about them, and nothing says thoughtful like a truly personalized gift.
With that said, I wanted to share this simplistic yet personalized mommy and me gift box I made for a good friend of mine who is about to have a little bundle of joy soon!
The first thing I wanted to include was a custom designed baby blanket. I started by finding the correct size of the baby blanket I wanted to purchase from Zazzle. This one happened to be 29″x39″. Using Illustrator and Photoshop, I created a Scandinavian inspired design because I’m a big fan of keeping things simple and clean. I stuck to a black and white color palette because I knew she probably already received a few pink blankets as gifts. And I love black and white 🙂
Taking the personalization to the next level, I also included the baby’s name and my friend’s wedding photo. To keep the simplicity and cleanliness of the design, I kept the name and photo enclosed in a couple of the chevrons. This also kept it from overpowering the design and standing out too much.
Being that this is a mommy and me gift box, I had to include a little something for mommy too. I know my friend loves candles so I included this lovely citrus scented candle and a vanilla scented bar soap (for mommy pampering) from Cost Plus World Market.
Everything was put together in a glossy white collapsible gift box (size 10″x 4 1/2″) from The Container Store. I absolutely love these boxes because they’re multi-use. They’re not only beautiful for gifting but can be reused as storage or keepsake boxes. I filled it with white shredded paper and enclosed it with a simple black ribbon.
Sometimes life is just too busy and there’s no time for being crafty, but even something as simple as filling a box with a few of your loved one’s favorite goodies would make the perfect personalized gift.
